About InterLibrary Loans (ILL):

ILL (also known as interloan, document delivery, or document supply etc.) is a service whereby a user of one library can borrow books, videos, DVDs, sound recordings, microfilms, or receive photocopies of articles in magazines that are owned by another library.

ILL Materials that can be requested through STMU Library:

The Library will process ILL requests for materials of all types. However, some libraries to which ILL requests are forwarded may place restrictions on the types of materials that will be circulated through ILL. The kinds of restrictions will vary from institution to institution.

Geographical Restrictions on ILL :

The Library can readily process ILL requests for materials at other Libraries in Canada, and generally North America. However, ILL requests from materials outside North America will not be processed.

If you need to make a Inter-Library Loans, you can access ILL request forms at the library circulation desk or download the following ILL request form and return it to the library circulation desk.

Course Reserves Collections:

The Library's Course Reserves Collection provide controlled and ready access to items required for St. Mary's University College course readings and/or viewings. Course reserves may include:

  • syllabi;
  • books;
  • lecture notes;
  • journal articles;
  • class assignments;
  • sample tests; and
  • other relevant information to support classroom instruction.

These materials are circulated on loan periods of either 2 hours, 1 day, or 3 days. A label on the item will state the loan period.

St. Mary's University College Moodle is a web-based course management tool that allows your instructors to facilitate "anytime, any place" access to learning content for the specific courses in which you are enrolled. Use the STMU Moodle to access your

  • course syllabus;
  • course schedule; or
  • information about your course assignments.

The "Modular Object-Oriented Dynamic Learning Environment" (Moodle) is an open source Course/Content Management System (CMS), but one that is specifically designed for teaching purposes such as a Learning Management System (LMS) or Virtual Learning Environment (VLE).




What is a TAL card?

A TAL card allows you to borrow books from any library in Alberta that is a member of The Alberta Library (TAL). TAL Member Libraries in Calgary include any branch of the Calgary Public Library, McKimmie Library at the University of Calgary, SAIT Library and the Alberta College of Art and Design Library. Member libraries provincially include the libraries at the University of Alberta, University of Lethbridge, Mount Royal College, Red Deer College, Medicine Hat College and NAIT.

Who Can Get a TAL card at STMU?

St. Mary’s University College Library issues TAL cards to all Primary Clients. Primary Clientele includes:

  • faculty of STMU;
  • staff of STMU; and
  • all full-time & part-time students of STMU.

NOTE: Community Borrowers of St. Mary’s University College Library do not have the privilege of obtaining a TAL Card as they are not Primary Clientele of STMU. The Library directs community borrowers to obtain a TAL card through their local public library branch or another library institution of which they are a member.

How to Get a TAL card at STMU?

  • If you are a member of the St. Mary’s University College community, ask for and fill out an application for TAL card at the Front Desk in the library.

How to Use a TAL card?

  • When borrowing books from a member library, present The Alberta Library card, along with your St. Mary’s University College card, at the lending library.
  • A barcode for the lending library will be placed on your Alberta Library card.
  • You can borrow up to five books at a time for 2 - 3 weeks, depending on the lending library. Renewals are not generally permitted.
  • You may return the books to the St. Mary's University College Library and we will return the material to the lending library.



If you need help with conducting research and using the Library tools ask one of the Library Staff. And the Library's General Reserves collection contains a variety of learning and research tools for limited period loans. You can find grammars, guides to writing research papers and essays, and handbooks on research methods for various disciplines. It is located on the north wall of the library, between the photocopier and the Audio/Visual collection.

However, if you need help with writing your research paper or on another assignment, then you should consult your instructor and/or visit The Learning Centre.

The Learning Centre has the resources to help you with

  • grammar;
  • proofreading & editing strategies;
  • documentation & citation standards;
  • study skills & time management; and
  • much, much more.
